Social-Democrats Set Congress Date, Demote Local Leader for Controversial Diaspora Comments

The party’s interim leader, Marcel Ciolacu, announced that the social-democrats voted to remove Badalau from the party’s central leadership, with the PSD Giurgiu branch to decide whether it will maintain the former economy minister as its leader.

“What I know is that PSD was harmed a lot by that statement, even if he (Badalau, ed.) explained us the context in which he made it,” Ciolacu said at the end of Wednesday’s meeting.

Last week, Badalau called the idea of increasing representation in the Parliament for the Romanian diaspora “madness”, and alluded to the idea that most of the Romanian citizens who live abroad would be prostitutes.

Political sources told MEDIAFAX that Giurgiu County Council Chairman Marian Mina will take over Badalau’s sport in the party’s interim collective leadership.

The party also decided to hold a normal congress on February 29, 2020, in order to appoint a new full-time party leadership. The social-democrats are currently led by interim chairman Marcel Ciolacu and a collective leadership of committee formed out of several regional leaders.
